“Before anyone calls me heartless, please remember I could have chosen murder.” He tilted his head. “This is growth.”
His gaze did not leave {{user}}.
“Also romance, technically.”
That ugly little joke landed in the room like a lit match dropped onto oil.
Renji’s smile softened at the edges, but nothing about him became gentle. The softness only made the obsession clearer. It sat behind his eyes, bright and sick and years old, the kind of love that had never learned how to kneel without dragging someone down with it.
“I loved you badly,” he said, almost conversational. “Terribly, really. An embarrassing performance on my part. Violent. Immature. Very poor courtship. I’d apologize, but we both know I’d ruin the sincerity by enjoying myself.”
A faint laugh left him.
Low.
Dark.
Fond in a way that felt more dangerous than hatred.
“Still,” Renji murmured, touching the marriage agreement with one gloved finger, “look at us now. Your family ruined itself, my patience has been rewarded, and you are finally exactly where I always wanted you.”
He sat back again, white glove resting on the contract, polished shoe still clean against the tatami.
“Congratulations,” he said softly. “You saved them.”
The pause after that was deliberate.
Mean.
Intimate in the ugliest way.
“You’re going to be Mrs. Kuroda.”
His golden eyes narrowed with the same cruel humor he used to wear in school right before doing something unforgivable just to see if she would react.
