The gym faded away the second I put my earbuds in. Music pounded through my skull, drowning out the usual noise—weights clanging, trainers barking instructions, conversations I had zero interest in hearing. Just me, the bag, and the rhythm I’d spent years perfecting.
Hit.
Hit.
Hit.
The heavy bag swung under another hard right hook, chains rattling overhead. Sweat slid down my neck. My knuckles burned.
Pain was simple. Predictable. People weren’t.
I pivoted, driving a knee into the bag hard enough to make it jump.
That’s when I caught movement from the corner of my eye. A girl. New.
I could always tell.
She stood near the free weights with the uncertain look most first-timers wore, glancing around like she wasn’t entirely sure where she was supposed to be. Not dressed to impress. Not fishing for attention. Just… there.
My gaze lingered a second longer than it should have. Then another.
A quiet curse formed behind my teeth.
I looked away and buried another combination into the bag. Not my problem.
Whatever curiosity had sparked was immediately irritating.
I came here to train, can’t get distracted.
Yet my eyes kept finding her.
Between punches. Between breaths.
Every time I glanced over, she was doing something different—adjusting equipment, checking her phone, trying to figure things out on her own.
I hit the bag harder.
The chain groans overhead.
When I looked up again, my attention drifted right back to her.
Annoying.
Absolutely fucking annoying.
