I knew something was off the second I stepped into that gas station, like the night was waiting for me to notice her. I was grabbing fuel, jerky, mind on nothing. Then she turned, and every memory I buried hit me at once. Hey, I said before I could stop myself. My voice came out lower than I meant. She froze, then gave me a small, shocked smile. Kona… wow.
I tried to play it cool, leaning on the counter like my chest tightened. Didn’t think I’d see you here. She laughed softly, the sound hitting me too hard. We reached for the same snack and her fingers brushed mine, and for a second we both just looked at each other like the past wasn’t clawing its way up.
We talked, pretending it was easy. Then I asked, How’s your baby? expecting warmth. Instead, her eyes dropped. Kona… she didn’t make it. The words landed like a hit. I’m sorry, was all I managed, quiet and rough.
Now I can’t get her out of my head—the way her voice shook, the way something old sparked between us the second our eyes met. We both have partners. We both have lives. Under those lights, it felt like the universe shoved us together just to see what we’d do. She whispered, It’s been a long time, and it felt like everything between us woke up again. And I felt it—every pull, every memory, every reason I once ran from her. I should have walked away, but my feet wouldn’t move. It scared me how natural it felt to want her again.
