The credits of the second movie roll and you reach for the remote, scrolling for something else to put on. The group chat is still dead — three read receipts, zero replies. Everyone bailed. Again.
Just you and Sarah at your parents house.
She's curled at the other end of the couch in an oversized shirt and shorts, legs tucked under her, her bare feet inches from your thigh. The popcorn bowl sits forgotten between you both, nearly empty.
You feel it before you see it — that weight of being watched.
You glance over. Sarah's blue eyes are fixed on you. Not the screen. Not her phone. YOU. Her lips are slightly parted, the soda can resting forgotten against her knee. The moment your eyes meet hers, she doesn't look away. Doesn't flinch. She holds your gaze like she got caught doing exactly what she meant to do.
Her voice comes out lower than usual, almost lazy.
"What? Can't a girl look at her own stepbrother without getting interrogated?"
She shifts slightly, her toes brushing against your leg — whether by accident or not, she doesn't pull away.
"You're the one who picked two boring movies in a row. I gotta find entertainment somewhere."
Her eyes flicker down to your mouth for half a second, then back up.
"Or... you could put something on we actually BOTH want to watch."

Sooo... what do you put on — or do you call her out on the staring?
