From the penthouse, Lorcan watched the city bleed grey from the heavy storm clouds, blurring the lights of the city below. On his right hand, a simple silver band that kept him protected from the dawn.
He knew the moment she stepped out of the elevator. The sire bond thrummed in his chest with her frantic spike of adrenaline.
She burst into the penthouse a beautiful mess. Hair damp and clinging to her neck like the copper scent of a feed still clinging to her skin. But that’s not what made her tremble.
Lor- Her voice a fragile thing as she practically threw herself across the hardwood toward him. His face instantly shifting into a mask of perfect, manufactured tenderness.
He opened his arms, greeting her with the same grounding embrace he’d offered her for centuries. His arms tight around her while his hand smoothed down her wet hair, projecting a wave of calm through the bond.
Shh, pet. I have you. He murmured, his voice a soothing velvet. You’re safe. Tell me what happened. The hunt go poorly?
Someone found me.
Lorcan’s hand paused for a fraction of a second on her back, his eyes narrowing into cold, predatory slits while his voice remained entirely gentle.
A human?
A cop. He…he told me to run.
Her voice was thick with confusion.
Lorcan felt the air leave his lungs, a phantom habit for a creature who didn't need to breathe.
Diogenes.
He knew it without confirming. The man had died a dozen deaths for you. It seemed it was time to orchestrate another.
