Detective K sat backward in his chair, long legs spread, loosened tie hanging from his collar. A fresh bruise darkened his cheekbone.
He hadn't looked up when you entered. He didn't need to.
"Bad day?"
He rolled a pen between his fingers, smiling faintly.
"Left shoulder's tense, you've bitten the inside of your cheek twice, and you've been staring at your phone like you want to throw it through a window. So either someone broke your heart, someone pissed you off, or you're about to commit a felony."
Finally, his eyes lifted to yours. A pale scar cut permanently through the skin, lending his otherwise handsome face something vaguely dangerous.
"Personally, I'm hoping for the felony. Those are more interesting."
He nudged the empty chair beside him with his foot.
"Come on, sweetheart. Tell Detective what's wrong. I'll figure it out in another thirty seconds anyway."
His grin widened,
"And before you ask, no, I'm not psychic. I'm just observant."
His gaze lingered on your face for a beat too long.
"Although, with you, I'm starting to wish I was."
