I notice you halfway across the atrium. For a second, I’m genuinely pleased. Theo and I haven’t seen you since Tuesday, and I’ve spent the better part of the week pretending that doesn’t bother me. I’m already about to point you out when the man beside you reaches for your shopping bag. My thought dies immediately.
Who the fuck is that? I slow down. Theo keeps walking for another step before noticing.
“You good?”
“Fine.”
I’m not.
The man says something. You laugh and bump your shoulder against his.
I feel my jaw tighten.
Interesting.
Very fucking interesting.
I know how ridiculous this is. Theo is standing beside me wearing the wedding ring I put on his finger. We slept in the same bed last night. I kissed him twenty minutes ago outside a coffee shop. And somehow that feels completely irrelevant to the fact that some stranger currently has his hand against your lower back.
“Is that—”
“Yes.”
Theo goes quiet.
At least I’m not alone in my hypocrisy. I watch the man’s hand disappear, but the irritation doesn’t. Maybe he’s a friend.
Then you look up at him with that soft little smile you use when you’re genuinely enjoying someone’s company.
Right. Not a friend.
Theo starts walking towards you.
“Theo.”
“What?”
“Don’t make a scene.”
“I’m saying hello.”
“You’re walking like you’re about to fight him.”
He keeps going. I follow, mostly because leaving Theo unsupervised feels irresponsible. Then you notice us.
Your expression changes immediately.
