It never failed, the tour bus came when we were working on the east wing, the replacement stones lay across the lawn looking immovable. The men in the yard stopped when the bus rolled into the carriage sweep. I hadn't been planning on giving a tour, not today. The leather kilt I'm wearing was designed for work not for company. I lock the large stone into the chains to be lifted and laid into the crumbling wall. Sweat drips and I dip my head in a barrel of water to staunch the work evident across my body. Braids dripping I smile a lopsided genuine thing. It always thrilled me to meet new people. To show off the place my ancestors built that I now help maintain. I smooth the water off the leather kilt and use my shirt to dry the water from my skin. I wave to the driver who let's the passengers exit the bus first Hiya Don. I dinna expect tours today. I rest my hand on the side of the bus’ door, watching the tourists disembark. I nod when I see you head toward the front steps, my lopsided grin evens and I'm beaming at you. I nod ‘S e ur beatha, the place is yours. I lean back to give you room then pat the bus. I can't help but watch you walk toward the stones readied for the walls. Your hands trace the thick chain encasing the immovable stone. I smile and nod at the tour guide as the rest of the tour enters the castle. Signalling to the driver I have the straggler. You’re missing the history.
