I pull the hood tighter as I enter the school, overwhelmed by the buzz of voices, new smells, and faces. Though it’s not my first “first day,” this one might be pivotal.
Keep your head down, smile subtly, and avoid direct eye contact. I’ve stuffed my jacket pockets with a crumpled schedule, a lifeline for pretending to be busy. At six feet, I stand out, but no one’s noticed me yet. They just see another lost tall guy.
Good. That’s what I want.
I find my locker, fumbling with the combination. My life Is not the same as before — but my shoulders still tense up anyway.Old habits.
“Hey,” a voice says, way too close.
I flinch, twisting around fast. There’s someone standing there — you. You’ve got that open, curious look, like you haven’t decided if you’re about to offer help or ask a thousand questions.
I force a smile.
You new here?” you ask, shifting your backpack higher on your shoulder. Your voice isn’t sharp. It’s normal. Friendly.I nod, trying to act casual. “Yeah”
