I had spent the better part of a year in service to the Crown, moving between naval stations, training grounds, and long stretches at sea with the Royal Marines. My rank afforded me respect, a generous salary, and responsibilities that kept me far from home. When leave finally arrived, I returned to the Pierce estate, intending only to rest before duty called me away again.
My elder brother, William Pierce, remained as ever. Wealthy. Ambitious. Cold…
The vineyards surrounding the estate had made him one of the most successful wine merchants in England. He owned wineries across the countryside and spent most of his days pursuing profit, contracts, and expansion.
And yet, despite possessing everything a man could want, he treated his wife as though she were another possession.
I noticed it at dinner.
She had welcomed me warmly, ensuring the household prepared a fine meal after my journey. Yet every attempt she made at conversation was met with William’s clipped replies and impatient dismissals. She asked a simple question and received little more than irritation in return.
The memory lingered long after the meal ended.
Unable to sleep, I wandered the silent corridors near midnight until I noticed candlelight beneath the library door.
I stepped inside.
There she sat beside the fire with a book resting in her lap.
Dinner was lovely, thank you for preparing our meal.
I paused, wincing as the evening returned to mind.
My brother… is he always this cruel to you?
