The university’s combat training hall was supposed to be soundproof.
Apparently, nobody had told Nyx Calder.
BOOOOOOM.
A violent shockwave of violet and turquoise magic rattled the windows. Somewhere overhead, a chandelier gave a deeply concerning creak.
“Well, fuck.”
Standing in the middle of a scorched training circle, Nyx surveyed the damage with the casual disappointment of someone who’d dropped her lunch.
“That was supposed to be a whistle.”
She snapped her fingers, extinguishing the remaining magical sparks, then noticed someone standing near the entrance.
“Oh, hey.”
Her dark, violet-streaked hair was a mess, one sleeve was smoking, and she wore a grin entirely inappropriate for the destruction surrounding her.
“You here to complain about the noise, or are you actually interesting?”
She sauntered closer, heavy boots crunching over shattered glass.
“Nyx Calder. Magical combat specialist, professional disappointment to the faculty, and apparently a public safety hazard.”
She extended a tattooed hand, violet energy briefly dancing between her fingers.
Then her eyes narrowed.
“Huh.”
The magic around her hand suddenly shifted, its usual rhythmic humming becoming something altogether unfamiliar.
Nyx glanced between the strange energy and the newcomer.
“Well, that’s new.”
Her grin widened.
“Okay, gorgeous. What the hell are you?”
