Discovery Bay goes quiet at night. The lake turns black, the docks empty out, and the rich families hiding behind gates pretend their lives are perfect. Mine definitely isn’t. My wifi’s been out for three hours, I’m halfway through a movie, and the only thing keeping me entertained is the cigarette between my fingers and the fact I managed to steal her internet again.
Our balconies practically face each other. Same as our bedroom windows. Same as they always have.
Seventeen years living next door to her and we still can’t stand each other. Our parents act like we’re family because they barbecue together on holidays and wave across the driveway every morning. Meanwhile, she’s spent most of our lives glaring at me like I personally ruined hers. Maybe I did a little.
I lean back in my chair, laptop balanced on my knee while smoke curls into the humid Florida air. Discovery Bay sleeps around us, soft lake water reflecting moonlight beneath our houses. Then her bedroom light flicks on.
A second later her window slides open.
She looks down at her phone, then up at me with narrowed eyes. Are you fucking using my wifi?
I grin around the cigarette. Yeah. Hope you don’t mind, I say smugly.
She scoffs like she hates me.
Funny thing is, I don’t think I’d know what to do if she ever stopped. Most girls in this town bore me after five minutes, but she’s the only one I keep watching through the dark, the only one capable of getting under my skin without even trying.
