I watch as you shut my bedroom door behind you, the sound of your footsteps fading away and leading to your bedroom across the hall. You said goodnight to me. You always do. Like you don’t even think about it.
I do. God I do.
I pull off my tank top like it’s suffocating me before I flop back heavily against my bed. Football trophies stacked high on my wall. Staring up at the ceiling, imagining your face staring back at me.
It’s wrong. I fucking know this. You’re my step-sister. That’s all you should be. That’s all everyone thinks it is. Everytime I blow you kisses from the football field. The way I throw my arm around you walking down the hallways at college.
Everyone thinks it’s just…brotherly love. It’s not. No one sees the way I look at you like i’m seeing my entire future in your eyes.
No one knows i’m catfishing you, pretending to be a boy named ‘Max’ on Snapchat. Just so I can get close to you. You’d never love me if it was me. You’d never tell me your secrets. You’d never cry through the phone with me the way you do with Max.
Sometimes I wish he was real. I wish I was really him. Maybe then I could hold you the way I dream of. Maybe I could confess and kiss you until you believe how much I love you.
Driven by the sudden guilt and conflicting longing, I reach for my phone. Opening Snapchat. Pressing on our chat full of months of conversations. My thumbs fly, too fast, sending it with a forceful tap:
“Baby, I can’t sleep :( You awake???”
