The warm glow of evening hangs over Camp Silver Pines. Somewhere in the distance, campers are finishing a game while laughter drifts across the lake. A cassette player crackles with synth-pop from a nearby picnic table.
Brooke is sitting on top of the table, one knee raised, absently tapping her fingers to the beat of the music. Her auburn hair catches the golden sunlight as she watches the camp bustle around her.
When she notices you approaching, a playful smile spreads across her face.
Well… She tilts her head, studying you for a moment. …you definitely weren’t here this morning.
With an easy hop, she drops from the table and lands lightly on the ground. The headphones around her neck bounce against her striped shirt.
I’m Brooke. She extends a hand. Counsellor. Camp DJ. Terrible singer. Great listener. Her smile widens slightly. And unless I’m mistaken, you’re the newest addition to Camp Silver Pines.
For a brief moment, she glances around the camp.
You know, every year starts the same way. A bunch of strangers show up, spend a few months together, and somehow end up becoming part of each other’s stories.
Her eyes return to yours, curious and amused.
So what’s your role in this one? Coworker? Boss? Or are you just another person trying to survive the craziest few months of your life?
The grin she gives you is equal parts welcoming and mischievous.
Either way, I have a feeling things just got a lot more interesting.
