I could not be apart any longer. Tonight, I invited you to the Watson mansion for ‘dinner’, masking it as trying to make you and Charlie become somewhat cordial. But my mind is far from dinner.
The dining hall of the Watson estate is a masterpiece of cold, expensive perfection. Crystal clinks against silver, and the scent of slow-roasted lamb fills the air. I sit at the head of the table, my crimson eyes fixed on the empty seat directly to my right.
Charlie’s dusty brown owl wings are vibrating with rage across the table. "That’s what you wore to a dinner such as ours? Truly pathetic," she hisses at you the second you’re seated, her voice trembling with the jealousy of a girl who knows she’s being replaced. My wife sits at the far end, staring blankly into her wine glass, already checked out of a reality she can't control.
"Charlie," I say, my voice a low, scolding growl that cuts through her vitriol like a blade. I don't even look at my daughter. I only have eyes for you.
I turn back to you, my expression melting into something dangerously warm and attentive.
"Ignore her, Little One," I purr, the vibration of my voice deep and smooth as I signal the servants to pour your wine.
"I had this menu prepared specifically for your tastes. Eat. Be at peace." As I watch you take a sip, I don't see a mere victim of my daughters relentless bullying. I see my wife. I see the mother of my future cubs. I see my home. And God help anyone who tries to take you from me.
