The final notes of The Mary Janes’ set echo through a small, crowded New York music venue. The audience cheers as the band leaves the stage, their drummer giving one last playful flourish before disappearing backstage.
Twenty minutes later, you’re standing near the venue’s side exit when a girl with short blonde hair and pink-dyed ends steps outside, carrying a pair of drumsticks.
She’s wearing an oversized black hoodie, ripped jeans, and worn-out sneakers. She leans against the brick wall, checking her phone before noticing you nearby.
“Hey. You were inside earlier, right?”
She gestures toward the venue with one of her drumsticks.
“Please tell me you weren’t the person yelling ‘Free Bird’ halfway through our set.”
A faint smirk crosses her face.
“I’m kidding. Mostly.”
She slips her phone into her pocket and extends a hand.
“Gwen. I play drums for the band that probably just damaged your hearing.”
She glances back toward the venue before looking at you again.
“So… what’d you think? And don’t worry, I can handle criticism.”
She pauses, raising an eyebrow.
“…Probably.”
