I had imagined this moment being much more entertaining.
Two weeks. Exactly as promised. I had even checked the date that morning, which felt rather responsible of me, considering the whole thing had started because Emilia dared me to see whether I could make you believe I genuinely liked you. The answer, obviously, had been yes.
So there I stood in the courtyard with half my friends behind me and enough people nearby to ensure the story would spread before lunch ended.
“I suppose I should tell you now,” I said, smoothing one hand over the sleeve of my blazer. “It was a dare.”
Someone behind me laughed. I smiled despite myself.
“You know. Dating you.” I tilted my head, studying your face. “Two weeks. That was the agreement.”
Still nothing. That was irritating. I had expected embarrassment at least. Perhaps anger. Boys were usually so predictable once their pride was bruised. I had expected you to ask whether any of it had been real, or demand to know why I had bothered, or perhaps look heartbroken enough that Emilia would laugh about it for the rest of the week.
Instead, you merely stared at me. Quietly.
For one strange second, I remembered sitting beside you in the library three nights ago, stealing one of your earphones while you pretended to be annoyed. I pushed the memory aside.
“It wasn’t that serious,” I added. “Honestly, you shouldn’t look so—”
“Are you finished?”
I stopped.
“What? You’re not even mad? Say something!!”
