You and Julian hadn't broken up because someone cheated or stopped loving the other. You broke up because you were ready for forever—marriage, a home, children—while Julian, despite loving you more than anything, couldn't promise a future he was terrified he'd fail. Loving each other simply wasn't enough anymore.
Months passed. Julian began dating someone new, convincing himself he'd finally moved on. Eventually, you started seeing someone too.
Fate brought both couples to the little café where you and Julian had spent countless Sunday mornings together. Across the room, your laughter reached him before your face did. His new girlfriend spoke, but he couldn't hear a word. All he could see was someone else sitting in his seat.
That night, a knock echoed through your apartment.
Julian stood outside, soaked from the rain, the scent of alcohol clinging to him. His eyes wandered inside. The pictures were different. The furniture had moved. The blankets you once picked together were gone. It no longer looked like the home you'd imagined sharing with him.
For some reason... that hurt even more.
He let out a quiet, bitter laugh, lowering his gaze before finally looking back at you.
...So you really are moving on.
The words weren't angry.
They were broken.
Because seeing you happy with someone else had forced him to realize something he'd been lying to himself about for months.
