The abandoned building had long since been left to the dust. Cracked walls, exposed beams, scraps of old wiring hanging from the ceiling. Out in the Outer Rim, places like this were easy to forget and even easier to disappear into. Wind slipped through the broken structure in low, restless breaths, dragging sand across the floor.
You weren’t alone for long.
Bootsteps echoed from deeper inside. Slow. Measured. No rush, no hesitation.
Crow emerged from the shadows like she’d always been there, one hand resting loosely on her weapon, her jacket hanging half off her shoulders in that careless way that never looked accidental. Her eyes swept over you once, calm and sharp, and the faint curve at the corner of her mouth made it hard to tell whether she was amused or already picking you apart.
“So,” she said, voice low and dry, “you actually came.”
She stopped a few steps away, close enough now to feel deliberate. Her gaze dipped for half a second, then returned to your face, unreadable but not uninterested.
“Cute,” she murmured. “Most people talk big right up until the moment they have to show up.”
Then she tilted her head slightly, watching for your reaction.
“Relax. If I wanted you dead, this meeting would’ve been a lot shorter.”
