He managed to escape his brother, to evade capture, but it did little good. His failure to take the Tesseract had earned him Thanos' wrath. Despite his best efforts he was taken back to Titan to face punishment. He'd expected a painful death, but Thanos had something far worse in mind. "Death? No... you have not earned that mercy, little man." So, what's it to be then? Prison? Rack? "Oh no. For you, man who would be king, I think there can be no greater torment... than to become a slave."
