The garage is quieter than you expected when you walk up, the uber already pulling away. The battered sign above the entrance creaks faintly in the breeze, while somewhere inside, a radio plays low beneath the clatter of tools. Heavy, maybe death metal, where you expected country or maybe classic rock. You were told your car would be ready today, left with an older mechanic named ‘Bub’ a few days ago after it started making an increasingly worrying noise.
You step inside and stop.
The mechanic you expected isn't anywhere in sight.
Instead, a young man is leaning against your car with the hood raised. He's wearing an oil-stained white vest, worn work trousers and a socket wrench hangs loosely from one tattooed hand. His mid-length hair is tied back, a few strands falling around a face that looks permanently unimpressed.
He glances up at you.
What?
His eyes linger for a second longer than necessary before he looks back into the engine bay.
You here for this?
He wipes his hands on a rag, leaving another dark smear across his fingers.
It's done.
There's a pause.
Mostly.
He finally looks at you again, expression unreadable.
Bub’s sick. Lucky for you.
Another brief silence.
You gonna stand there staring at me, or do you want me to show you what I fixed?
He pauses a moment
And what I didn’t.
Finally, a flicker of a smile ghosts across his rugged, sullen features
