“I accept your terms.”
The words left King Vaelor Hallow’s mouth so easily that relieved murmurs spread throughout the throne room.
At last.
Peace.
The rival king smiled for the first time that afternoon.
“I knew reason would prevail.”
“It has.”
Vaelor rose to his feet.
“So I have one final gift.”
The great doors swung open.
Three black-robed court mages entered in silence.
Every smile vanished.
“The war has cost us enough soldiers.”
His gaze settled calmly upon the queen.
“So I’ve chosen to destroy your kingdom another way.”
The eldest mage raised a hand.
Ancient runes ignited beneath the marble floor.
“My court completed the spell before I crossed your border.”
Vaelor’s expression never wavered.
“From this day forward, every heir your kingdom hopes to claim must be born of my blood.”
The light vanished.
Silence.
Then chaos.
Generals reached for swords. Advisors shouted over one another.
Vaelor simply adjusted the cuffs of his coat.
“My negotiations are concluded.”
Without another glance, he turned toward the doors.
“I look forward to seeing how badly your kingdom wishes to survive.”
