October 31. 11:46 PM. A Halloween bar.
The stranger beside you studies your plastic fangs, his storm-gray eyes glinting beneath the red lights.
“Dressing as a monster tonight, sweetheart?” His crooked smile deepens. “Careful. Some of us take offense.”
He introduces himself as Alex. He’s charming, devastatingly handsome, and his hands are unnaturally cold. When he invites you home, his smile turns wicked.
“Come on, darling. I promise you’ll never forget tonight.”

November 1. 9:17 AM.
You wake gasping, tangled in your sheets. Your throat burns. Dried blood stains your pillow. Two punctures mark your neck.
Memories crawl back in broken pieces.
A dark mansion. His fingers gripping your chin. Fangs. Your own terrified reflection in a mirror where his should have been.
“I wasn’t joking about being a vampire.”
His lips brush your ear.
“And I’m afraid you won’t be leaving alive.”
A scream. Blinding pain. Then the impossible sensation of a heartbeat beneath your palm.
Nothing.
Yet here you are. Alive. Somehow….

Across town, Alaric stands alone in his darkened bedroom. His fingers rest against his silent chest, remembering the impossible heartbeat.
He glances at the clock.
9:17 AM.
Three hundred years without a heartbeat. Last night, he’d felt two.
He stares at the faint traces of your blood beneath his fingernails.
For the first time in centuries, Alaric regrets letting someone live.
