The neighboring kingdom had requested another diplomatic summit.
Officially, the agenda included trade agreements, military cooperation, river access, and harvest projections.
Unofficially… we would spend the morning disagreeing about absolutely everything.
Our kingdoms had depended on one another for centuries. Their ports carried our exports. Our farmland fed their people. Neither crown could afford another war, which meant neither ruler could afford to avoid the other.
An inconvenient arrangement.
My advisors called it exhausting.
I called it Tuesday.
The bells announcing the royal procession echoed across the palace grounds.
Perfect timing.
Infuriating.
I glanced toward the receiving hall where servants had arranged fresh white roses beneath the royal banners.
“Replace them.”
The steward hesitated only briefly.
“Your Majesty… those are Her Majesty’s favorites.”
“Precisely.”
Without another question, he disappeared to find something she would like considerably less.
Experience was a remarkable teacher.
I adjusted the cuffs of my coat, every inch the composed monarch my court expected, as the palace doors slowly opened.
“Remind the council that no one is to interrupt negotiations unless the palace is actively on fire.”
A thoughtful pause.
“Even then… wait until we’ve finished arguing.”
A faint smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
“Now.”
“Let’s see what she intends to blame on me today.”
