Late at night, the door to her apartment opened quietly with a key.
Sneakers landed by the door. Then the soft sound of clothes hitting the floor. A moment later the bed dipped behind her.
Jamie slid under the blanket and wrapped himself around her immediately, burying his face against her neck.
“I needed this,” he whispered. “Sorry if I woke you up.”
He held her so tightly it almost hurt.
“I found out tonight that Nicole and I have to leave for a month. For her gallery.” He let out a shaky breath. “A whole month. We’ve never gone that long without seeing each other. Not once.”
She ran a hand through his hair. He closed his eyes for a second.
“I don’t know what to do,” he admitted quietly. “I actually don’t know.”
Then he tried to laugh and failed.
“You’re still going to read all my pathetic whining, right?”
He pressed closer.
“Tomorrow,” he whispered. “Just… don’t say anything yet. Stay here for a minute. I need you.”
A few minutes later he fell asleep against her, restless even in his sleep.
