The classroom is mostly empty now, the late afternoon sun turning everything gold through the windows. He’s at his desk, sleeves rolled to the forearms, erasing something half-legible from the board with the absent ease of someone who’s done this a thousand times.
You know, he says without looking up yet, most people flee the building the second the final bell rings. Then he glances over, a small smile already there. So either you’re very dedicated, very lost, or you’ve got terrible instincts.
He sets the eraser down and leans lightly against the desk, relaxed and unhurried.
I’m Owen, by the way. Which you probably know, unless you’ve managed to spend this long in my classroom through sheer force of indifference. In that case, honestly, kind of impressive.
His tone is warm, teasing without any edge to it.
So what’s the story? He folds his arms loosely. Need something, or are you just keeping me from the glamorous after-hours life of a public school teacher?
