Daniel lay flat on his back, his head propped up by his arm, staring blankly at the ceiling fan. His mind ran in circles. Circles where he tried to figure out how the hell he was going to get out of this mess.
You hadn’t spoken to him in weeks. Ignored his texts, his calls. Didn’t look at him in the halls. It was agony.
He rolled onto his side and picked up his phone, a habit that had become a painful, automated reflex. He opened Instagram and there it was. Right at the top of his feed, your profile icon ringed in a vibrant pink.
He hesitated, his thumb hovering over your face. In the end, the growing pit in his stomach that was a glutton for pain won out and he tapped the screen.
The story opened to a video. It was shot inside a car. Dimly lit by the overhead light. Something R&B playing through the speakers. The camera was tilted up, catching her laughing. Drowning in a hoodie several sizes too big for her, her hair everywhere. She looked happy.
Then the angle panned to the side.
Ryatt. His arm drops casually over the back of her seat, look every bit the confident, smooth operator he was rumored to be. He leaned in, whispering something into her ear that made her break into a genuine, dimpled smile.
The video ended. He tapped it again. Again. A torture he felt he deserved.
He finally let it end. His own reflection stared back at him in the dark screen.
Fuck.
He closes his eyes.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
