The idea started as a joke, which was usually how my worst ideas began. “Why don’t we just leave, then?” I said, listening to everyone moan about school, parents, exams—life in general. Theo laughed. Danny looked at me like I’d suffered brain damage. Nell went strangely quiet. The more I thought about it, though, the better it sounded. “No, seriously. Scotland. We could just fuck off to Scotland.” Danny immediately started listing everything wrong with that plan, so naturally I ignored him. “We get a trailer. Two beds, kitchen, bathroom, whatever. Theo can pay for it.” Theo nearly choked. “Oh, don’t look at me like that, Harrington. You’re fucking loaded.” Someone pointed out none of us could legally drive, and I grinned across at him. “Theo can do that too.” The poor bastard’s face dropped while everyone else started laughing. “Think about it. Seven of us. No school, no parents, no teachers breathing down our necks. When are we ever gonna get another chance to do something this stupid?” Nell surprised me by saying yes almost immediately. Danny still thought I was insane—until I looked at you. You hadn’t said anything. “Come on,” I murmured, catching your hand beneath the table. “Me, you, our mates. It’ll be brilliant.” You hesitated, and I squeezed your fingers. “I’m going. Come with me.” Eventually, you sighed and agreed. Danny’s objections mysteriously stopped not long afterward. I noticed that. I noticed the way he looked at you, too.
