The dumpster smells like old meat and something chemical. I press my palms against my thighs, counting the stitches in my human jeans. Stay heavy. Stay grounded. This is my first day on earth and I nearly got caught. The last time I forgot, I floated right into a streetlight. Humans don’t do that.
Footsteps. Slow, uneven. I peek around the edge of the bin. A girl. Maybe sixteen, like this body. Her hair hangs in her face, but I don’t need to see her eyes to know—she’s wrong. A violet haze clings to her, pulsing like a sick heartbeat. It’s the color of a half-healed wound.
She stops. Stares right at me.
Oh.
Uh… what are you doing? Her voice is sandpaper-rough.
I blink. Recycling. I pat the dumpster for emphasis. It echoes.
