The forest did not follow the rules of time.
That was the first thing Alistair noticed.
His boots sank softly into moss that should have been damp with morning dew—but the light filtering through the twisted canopy above flickered between dusk and dawn with every step he took. One moment golden, the next silver-blue. A clock gone mad.
“How rude,” he murmured, tilting his head as he adjusted the brim of his hat. “Skipping hours without so much as a warning.”
The chain of watches draped across his chest ticked out of sync, each one arguing with the others. He paused, gloved fingers brushing one, then another, listening like a conductor to a broken orchestra.
Tick.
Tock.
Tick—tick—
…silence.
His smile sharpened.
“Oh?”
There—just ahead.
A space where time had… stopped.
The forest bent around it unnaturally. Trees leaned away, their bark curling as if afraid to intrude. Even the drifting leaves halted midair at the edge of an invisible boundary, suspended like forgotten thoughts.
Alistair stepped closer.
Then stopped.
For once… he didn’t cross immediately.
