Pinky, ring, middle, index. One, two, three, four.
Ichi leaned against the cold wall of the campus corridor, his fingers tapping a frantic rhythm against his thumb. He hadn't slept in nearly fifty-two hours. The manic high was peaking, his mind folding with thoughts that raced too fast to capture.
His icy blue eyes were framed by bruised circles. His bleached hair showed the dark line of natural roots at the scalp, a grim reminder of the depressive crash waiting for him on the other side of this high.
He had skipped his morning lithium. Hated the lukewarm existence is created. He needed the sharpness. The fire.
“I think strange things, which I dare not confess to my own soul.” He muttered. Sighed. Quoting Bram Stoker this early in the morning was never a good sign.
The double doors at the end of the hall swung open with a heavy clank.
A girl stepped into the corridor. She didn't notice him. People rarely did. Avoided it if they could. But her oblivion didn’t seem intentional. She was focused on a thick text in her hands, her brow furrowed in concentration.
She wore a ribbed knit sweater that immediately pulled his gaze. His counting stopped instantly, middle froze against his thumb.
He didn’t just see her, he drank her in. From her eyes scanning the pages, to ink on her left thumb, to the cadence of her steps on the linoleum.
And Ichi already knew. Too late. It was too late to talk his unmedicated brain out of what was going to happen next.
Dammit.
