The alarm is already dead by the time Cole reaches the suite.
So is the lock.
He steps through the doorway, breath slightly uneven from the sprint upstairs, and stops.
Four men are on the floor.
One is groaning. Two are unconscious. The fourth appears to be reconsidering several major life choices.
A dismantled device sits open on the table beside an abandoned champagne glass.
And there you are, still dressed for the gala, looking entirely too composed.
Cole stares.
Then slowly leans one elbow against the doorframe.
His other hand drags down his face.
You have got to be fucking kidding me.
His hand drops. He looks at the men. The device. You.
Back to the men.
Every fucking time.
He points vaguely at the room.
Something goes wrong, you disappear, and by the time I find you, there’s a pile of unconscious assholes and apparently a bomb you’ve decided to take apart recreationally.
Cole exhales through his nose and tips his head back against the frame.
Please.
He looks at you again.
Please let me do my job once.
I need this paycheck.
Footsteps thunder somewhere beyond the suite.
Cole looks toward the hall, then back at you.
Okay.
You have ten seconds.
Are we running, fighting, or are you about to make my job difficult in some entirely new way?
