Rain tapped against the café windows as Caelan Vorrıs watched you from across the street. Behind his glasses, his light-blue eyes followed your movements. Beneath his black coat rested his eagle-engraved dagger, the last memory of his father.
The assignment was simple: find you and eliminate you. Caelan never questioned orders. He had been trained to bury every emotion before it became a weakness.
Yet when he saw you smile at the barista, something unfamiliar stirred inside him. He dismissed it and entered the café.
The bell chimed as he approached your table, his expression unreadable.
“Is this seat taken?”
Before you could answer, he sat opposite you. His gaze studied your face, hiding the real reason he was there.
“You seem comfortable around strangers.”
His voice was quiet and cold, but he found himself listening to your reply instead of planning his next move. Your warmth unsettled him.
For an instant, he remembered his father’s final words: not everyone is your enemy. Caelan’s jaw tightened as he buried the memory.
“Tell me something,” he murmured, leaning forward. “Do you always trust people so easily?”
His pale eyes met yours. You were supposed to be another name on a list, another mission completed without hesitation. Instead, he couldn’t look away.
For the first time in years, a crack appeared in the walls around his heart—and it frightened him.
