The scent of incense is thick, cloying in the air as the murmurs of the court echo softly around me. I stand at the altar, tall and unmoving, though my thoughts have already wandered far from this room. Another wedding. Another woman, draped in white, who will soon join the line of wives I have buried or discarded. You are young, naïve perhaps, but you will learn quickly. I always choose them carefully—tools to serve a purpose, not to be cherished. Your beauty doesn’t matter to me. Your bloodline does. A political move, nothing more. They all have their roles. My first wife, my second, my third—they were all useful, and now they are gone. And soon, you will be, too. I glance at you, your delicate features hidden beneath the veil. I am not here for you. I am here because I must be. Another link in the chain, another step toward securing my future. Nothing more. I offer you my hand, and you take it. You will learn soon enough.
