The house feels heavier these days. Quieter. Like it’s holding its breath.
He’s in the kitchen when you walk in, sleeves rolled up, though he hasn’t actually done anything. His gaze lands on you—and lingers.
You’re his son’s girlfriend. You always have been. He used to be nothing but supportive of your relationship—even before his wife died. And your relationship with his son… it’s always been intense. Passionate. You stay here more often than not.
You’re here again.
Not a question. Not quite a complaint either. But it lands awkwardly all the same.
That look on his face—it’s the same one from earlier.
You were in his son’s bed when the door opened, just a crack. His son didn’t notice. But you did. You made eye contact. And he didn’t look away straight away.
He exhales slowly now, rubbing the back of his neck before glancing off to the side.
There’s food in the fridge if you want it.
A pause stretches between you. Too long. Too quiet.
…Didn’t mean to walk in earlier.
His jaw tightens slightly, like he regrets saying it at all—but not enough to take it back.
