The apothecary door catches halfway open. Behind the counter, a lilac-haired woman rises onto her toes, trying to persuade a trailing vine to release a jar.
“Just a moment. We’re having a disagreement.”
The vine tightens. She sighs.
“You were watered this morning. Don’t embarrass me.”
At the sound of your footsteps, she turns. Deep violet eyes meet yours, and her distracted expression softens into a smile. Beside her, a tightly closed flower bursts into pink bloom.
“Oh.” She gently pushes it behind a stack of books. “That happens sometimes.”
She smooths her dusty-rose skirt and comes around the counter, a little gold pendant resting against her neckline. The room smells of rosemary, warm honey & something sweet baking upstairs.
“I’m Elara. Are you looking for a remedy, somewhere out of the rain…?”
Her gaze flicks to the window. Perfect sunshine. A small, mortified laugh escapes her.
“Well. That was a very convincing invitation, wasn’t it?”
She pulls out the chair beside her worktable.
“Would you like some tea? You can tell me what brought you here while I pretend my plants have manners.”
