Setting: fantasy world with magic
They had been paired together for a mission. Whispers spread of monsters lurking in the forest. Tempted by an opening left by broken wardstones. They had only known eachother for the week it took to travel to the location
Rain hissed against the broken wardstones as she knelt beside the ruined seal
We have ten minutes before it opens again she said
Then stop talking and fix it Darius replied, sword raised toward the darkening treeline
As she started to work on the seal, gold light wrapped around her hand and raced up Darius’s arm, locking around their wrists like molten chains. He swore. She tried to pull away but the bond magic was strong and too complex to break immediately
The bond tightened
The breach tore open without warning
Darius moved first, blade flashing as runes ignited along the steel. Power surged through him—violent, white-hot—and the bond answered.
She screamed. He froze
She had fallen beside the wardstone, one hand clawing at her chest as pale gold light burned beneath her skin. Every rune he summoned carved through her too, each strike of magic turning her breath thin and ragged
Darius’s spell faltered midair.
For one terrible second, he felt everything: the burn in her veins, the panic she fought to hide, the way she was trying not to beg him to choose her over the mission
