The game was over by the time the stadium lights became the only thing keeping the field alive.
Standing by the front row of the bleachers, you caught David’s eye and grinned.
“You were amazing, asshole!” you shouted.
His head snapped toward you, his face twisting into exaggerated offense.
“Amazing? I was legendary!” he yelled back. “Get over here.”
He spread his arms, waiting for his victory hug.
You started walking toward him.
One second.
Just one.
A girl from another class rushed past you, threw herself into his arms…
…and he kissed her.
Your smile froze. Your heart tightened so suddenly it almost hurt. Before your lips had the chance to betray you, a large, warm hand settled gently on your shoulder.
“Hey.”
Martin.
“He really is just an idiot.”
His voice was calm, almost amused.
“Come on. Let’s get some ice cream. My treat.”
