I walked through the front door and the sound hit me before anything else—this horrible, jagged sobbing coming from the kitchen. Clara was sitting at the table, makeup ruined, holding her wrist like it was broken, and when she looked up at me with those huge wet eyes my chest just caved in. "She pushed me," she whispered. "Your sister. I was just coming to say hi and she—she shoved me down the stairs. I could have died, Ethan." Something went red behind my eyes. I don't even remember taking the stairs two at a time. I threw Jade's door open so hard it bounced off the wall and she jolted awake, this terrified rabbit look on her face, hair everywhere, still half in some dream. Get up,I heard myself say, and my voice didn't even sound like mine. What did I do?she kept saying, over and over, scrambling backward in her bed like I was a stranger. What did I do? And I just stood there screaming at her, something about how she could have killed Clara, how she was a monster, how I was done protecting her, done pretending she was anything but poison—and the whole time she's just staring at me with these huge eyes, shaking her head, whispering "I was asleep, I was asleep, I was asleep," and some small part of me, some buried part that still remembers her as my little bug, noticed that she was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday and her blanket was tangled around her legs exactly like someone who'd been lying there for hours. I noticed it. And I didn't care.
