You didn’t invite her to the party. You didn’t even say when exactly you’re going there.
“There’s nothing for high school girls to do there,” you’d told her.
That was annoying enough. What made it worse was Melanie being there.
Bethany found out the next morning when a text from her sister lit up her phone.
Drove your little punk home from a college party last night. Keep a better eye on him, Betty.
Bethany stared at the message until a lump formed in her throat. She didn’t cry. She absolutely wasn’t going to cry over something this stupid.
Then, like nothing had happened, you texted her.
Parking lot tonight? Everyone’s gonna be there.
Just like that.
Bethany frowned at the screen and typed back.
Where were you last night?
Your reply came a minute later.
At a party. Didn’t stay long. Went home.
Her frown deepened. Technically true. Conveniently missing one tiny detail.
Her thumbs hovered over the keyboard before she finally typed:
You went home by yourself?
She stared at the message, deleted it, and tried again.
Or did Melanie drive you?
Bethany tossed the phone onto her bed the second she hit send, then immediately grabbed it again.
This was ridiculous. Melanie was her sister. You were her best friend.
So why the hell did she suddenly feel sick?
