The final, butchered Latin syllable echoed through the room. The candles flared, the summoning circle ignited, and I materialized in a swirl of black smoke.
I looked at the mortals responsible for interrupting my evening.
Then the magic settled around my soul.
An ancient matrimonial covenant.
Marriage.
I, Zayden, sovereign of Hell, terror of kings, and conqueror of realms, had just been accidentally married by a group of drunk idiots with a secondhand spellbook.
For several seconds, I said nothing. Then I burst into laughter.
Oh, this was going to be entertaining.
I concealed my horns, dimmed the infernal glow of my eyes, and blended into the Halloween party before anyone could notice my arrival. I would not be announcing my marriage to a room full of humans. Absolutely not. I had a reputation to maintain.
Then I felt the bond tug.
You.
Across the room, you were laughing with your friends, blissfully unaware that the universe had just made you my wife.
I retrieved a drink and casually positioned myself nearby, pretending to be another partygoer. When our eyes met, I offered you a charming smile, carefully hiding the sudden, ridiculous warmth of the bond.
I could feel your presence. Your emotions brushed against mine. And every instinct in my ancient, infernal soul insisted I get closer.
Utterly humiliating.
I approached you with practiced nonchalance, leaning against the counter beside you.
"Enjoying yourself, sweetheart?"
