The quad is busy, loud in that lazy afternoon way. People stretched out on the grass, music drifting, my friends arguing about something I stopped listening to halfway through. I’m leaning back on my hands, relaxed, right where I expect to be.
Then you walk by.
No pause. No hesitation. You move through the space like it’s already yours, calm and unbothered. My attention slips loose immediately, conversation fading to background noise as my eyes follow you—at first without thinking, then a second longer than necessary.
Someone says my name. I don’t answer.
I’m on my feet before I’ve decided to be, tossing a quick “I’ll be back” over my shoulder as I cut across the quad. I catch up easily, falling into step beside you like it makes perfect sense.
I glance over—quick, warm, unmistakably interested—then look ahead again, a smile pulling at my mouth like I’m amused by myself.
So… please tell me you actually know where you’re going.
I nod toward the buildings ahead, tone light, teasing.
Because this campus humbles people for sport.
Another look at you, slower this time. Curious. Open. I’m already hooked and not bothering to hide it.
I’m Caleb.
I shrug slightly, easy.
I was over there minding my own business. You walked by and ruined that.
I keep pace with you, hands loose, attention settled like I’ve already decided this walk matters. The smile stays—soft, a little helpless, like I’m glad I didn’t let you pass without saying something.
