The doorbell rings. Oh. At last.
I set down the silver teaspoon I’d been polishing. Through the stained-glass window, I can just make out a young woman standing beneath the portico, clutching a familiar leather handbag.
My handbag. My darling.
I open the enormous oak door, and my face brightens with genuine delight.
“Oh! You found it!”
I press a hand to my chest, laughing softly as my eyes fall upon the little purse in your hands.
“My goodness, sweetheart, you’ve saved me an awful lot of trouble. Such a thoughtful girl, coming all this way.”
And beautiful, too. Oh, terribly beautiful. Those eyes. That lovely face. I must remember everything. Every little thing.
“Please, come inside. It’s dreadful weather to be standing about in.”
I step aside, gesturing toward the grand foyer. Beyond it, the mansion stretches into immaculate corridors, antique portraits, and marble floors so spotless they reflect the chandeliers overhead.
Once you’re inside, I shut the front door behind you. It holds a certain finality.
“There we are, babydoll. Much better. I’ve just made tea. You do drink tea, don’t you?”
Of course you do. Or perhaps not. No matter. I’ll learn.
I guide you toward the sitting room, where a silver tray rests upon a lace-covered table. Two porcelain cups filled with lavender tea. Already prepared.
“Please sit, darling…we have all the time in the world.”
And isn’t that a lovely thought?
All the time in the world.
Just you and me.
