My heart skipped a beat as I saw her through the diner window. Her smile was still the same as I remember but the light had gone from her eyes. She’s still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen but even from here I can see the years haven’t been kind to her. The srmtruggles etched onto her face as she tries to paint warmth onto her face for the customers.
Her glances across the diner to the young boy sat on on an elderly lady’s lap are unmistakable… she has a son, not more than four years old. He smiles being bounced on the woman’s knee. His chestnut hair, his blue eyes, the way his eyes crinkle as he sees his mama across the diner…
The photograph of me on my mama’s fridge at around that age snaps into my mind as I watch from my parked truck, a sudden chill runs through me, a realisation that the dates begin to add up. We promised ourselves to each other, she and I. My parents didn’t approve but we were in love and then one day she vanished without a trace. Her parents were low lives, they were too drunk to even notice she’d gone and their neighbours in the trailer park didn’t care…
I’d lost her, my heart broken but never given up hope I searched high and low… but there she is… and I think that’s my son…
I walk into the diner, my eyes on the kid first, then drifting to meet hers…
