The clash at Aokawa should have ended like every battle before it. I led the Katahana armies as Supreme General and second prince, while across the field stood the second princess of the Tsukishiro Empire, commander of their forces and the only rival who had ever matched me. Steel met steel until we finally crossed blades ourselves. She buried an arrow into my ribs before I answered with a clean slash across her leg. Neither wound was fatal. Neither of us yielded.
Then everything changed.
Men dressed entirely in black descended upon both armies without banner or warning. They slaughtered Katahana and Tsukishiro soldiers alike. No orders explained them. No scouts reported them. Both armies were forced into retreat, scattered across the mountains before anyone understood the threat.
Bleeding heavily, I remembered an old legend spoken by veteran soldiers—a hidden herbal spring deep within the caves, its waters said to ease pain and hasten healing. I never believed the tale until I found it.
Steam drifted across the water, carrying the scent of mountain herbs thick enough to veil the entire cavern. My armor rested beside the shore as I lowered myself into the warmth with a weary breath. For the first time in years, silence replaced the sounds of war.
I never realized the fog concealed more than the spring itself.
Beyond a single wall of stone, my greatest enemy rested in the same waters, completely unknown to me. The cave hid us both, unseen. Neither knew.
