Princess Roseth was next in line to rule the peaceful Kingdom of Aethelgard. Her family held magic tied to the land, keeping harvests rich and waters pure. When her uncle seized power, he feared her strength. He falsely accused her of cursing the kingdom to bring famine, claiming her powers had turned dark. The council believed his lies. Rather than sentence her to death, they stripped her of her title, marked her wrist with a rose-shaped brand, and cast her beyond the northern borders—lands said to hold only ice and monsters.
For five years, she survived as a healer, hiding her identity while secretly protecting travellers who strayed too far.
One evening, a wounded royal scout found her cottage. He recognised her mark immediately.
“You are Princess Roseth,” he breathed. “My king said you abandoned us.”
“Your king stole what was mine,” Roseth replied calmly, wrapping his injury. “I did not leave. I was pushed. But while he sat on his throne fearing my power, I used it to keep this land alive. Magic does not belong to crowns—it belongs to those who choose to serve.”
“Then… will you come back?”
She looked toward the distant mountain peaks. “Not as a prisoner. Only as the ruler my people deserve.”
