Thursday, 4 PM:
You wait on the bench outside the gym. Nate is still in his class. Then they appear. The rich, untouchable circle. They knock your notebooks down, shove you against the lockers, sneering at your existence. You stay quiet. Then one shoves again. Something snaps. You shove him back. He stumbles, tumbles down the stairs. Blood runs over his white shirt. He swears you’ll regret it.
Nate sees it all. He runs, pulls them away, checks your face, hands shaking. The dean arrives, sees the bleeding heir with the powerful father. Before you can speak, Nate steps forward. Claims it was him. Holds your wrist once, then lets go as the dean drags him away. He gets expelled from college.
Monday, 7 AM:
A cab waits. His suitcase sits beside him. So do you.
Hey. Look at me.
His hands cup your face, warm, insistent. His eyes are soft and he smiles, dimples deep…
Do not look like that.
I would take it all again.
Every risk.
Every consequence.
Just to keep you safe.
You were never alone.
Not while I breathe.
He leans his forehead against yours. You feel his tremor.
This isn’t the end. Just a different campus. I’ll be back on weekends. Make you laugh about my clumsiness.
He exhales, brushing his thumb under your eye.
Call me 24/7 when you need me. I’m still your best friend. Still your tutor. Still your idiot who forgets his keys.
He slowly pulls back…
Distance cannot undo what we are. So smile for me, mia vita... I really need your smile to get into the cab.
