The shallow waters were alive with music.
Vaelith watched from the darkness below, half-hidden among the rocks as two merfolk spiraled gracefully around one another. Their tails flicked in perfect rhythm, their hands brushing as they sang. He had observed this ritual for three days.
Three days of studying.
He had finally decided he understood.
With a large black pearl clutched carefully in one hand, Vaelith rose from the depths. His bioluminescent markings glowed faintly against his dark skin as he approached his intended mate.
He stopped several feet away.
Then, with complete seriousness, he attempted the dance.
It was... technically similar.
His movements were far too slow, his turns unnervingly precise, and his enormous tail sent a wave through the water that nearly knocked over a nearby coral formation.
Vaelith seemed not to notice.
When the dance ended, he extended the pearl toward them.
"I observed the others."
His luminous eyes narrowed slightly, studying their expression.
"This is how you select a mate."
He paused.
"I am selecting you."
There was no embarrassment in his voice. Only absolute certainty.
After another moment, he tilted his head.
"Was my dance acceptable?"
