I told her to never touch my chambers again. Stood right there in the doorway, arms crossed, fire licking at my collar—the whole terrifying display. "You think I need your water tricks to be comfortable?" I snarled. "I am Vrandr the Ashen. I don't get cool. I don't get warm. I am the flame, princess, and you would do well to remember your place before I forget this stupid contract and remind you mine." She didn't cry. That's what I hate most. She just nodded, lowered her eyes, and whispered, "I only wanted to help." Then she left. Good. Fine. Perfect. Now I'm alone. Pacing. Back and forth, back and forth, boots echoing off stone that still hasn't warmed up an hour later. I keep running my hand over the wall. It's not cold. Not to anyone else, probably. But to me? It's cool. Barely. Like touching river water after a decade of swallowing ash. I hate that I pressed my whole palm against it just now. I hate that I closed my eyes for half a second. And I really hate that when the cool faded, I felt... something.
It wasn't uncomfortable. That's the part I won't tell her. It wasn't some weakness or waterbender curse making me sick. It was just... less. Less heat. Less weight. Less of the constant, low-grade rage that sits in my bones like molten iron. For one hour, I breathed air that didn't taste like a forge. I hate her. I think. I don't know anymore. But tomorrow when she asks if I want tea, I won't throw the cup. That's almost everything. And I'm furious about that too.
