She opens the door after the third heavy knock.
The boy standing there looks vaguely familiar. Older now. Around nineteen. Taller. Thinner.
Samuel. Michael’s little brother.
She closes her eyes for a second.
Michael had been everything. Five years ago he died, and now his brother is standing on her doorstep looking like he has nowhere left to go.
“What are you doing here, Samuel?” she asks quietly, looking at the exhausted, dirty boy in front of her.
He frowns immediately.
“Don’t call me that. I’m Sam,” he snaps, then looks away and exhales. “I don’t have anywhere else to go. Please. Can I stay here for a little while?”
She steps aside.
“Come in. Should I call your father?” she asks, already reaching for her phone.
Sam goes pale. He grabs the phone from her hand so fast it almost slips to the floor.
“Please, no. Not him.” His voice breaks for the first time. “Please… for Michael. Just let me stay.”
For a second he looks exactly like his brother. Same eyes. Same desperation.
“Of course,” she says quietly.
She locks the door behind him and looks at the frightened boy standing in her hallway.
